Getting to YRDHF24

Must know things for travelling in Melbourne & Victoria, Australia.

What airport should I fly into?

Majority of the time if you are a interstate rider or international rider you will be flying into Melbourne “Tullamarine” airport. This is the main Melbourne airport and the best option. We recommend to avoid flying into “Avalon” airport as this is far away from the city and therefore more costly in terms of travel and time.

From there the best way to attend the event is by renting a car if you can. Australia is generally best traversed this way.

Travelling from the airport to the city

When it comes to getting from the airport to the city, if you cannot do so by renting your own car, you can purchase a bus to city ticket which takes you directly from the airport to “Southern Cross station”. This is a main hub in the Melbourne CBD which can help you connect with other transit options.

Using Public Transport In Melbourne

There are a variety of public transport options such as using buses, trains and trams, you will most likely need to use a combination of transport methods to travel from the airport to the mountain.

Myki

If you are travelling using public transport in Melbourne you will need to ensure that you have purchased a ‘Myki’ card for use on the public transport infrastructure in Melbourne. This applies to trams, trains & buses and can be used across all options. Ensure you have topped up your Myki to avoid fines and travel with ease. You can buy a card and top it up a kiosk or Myki stands, that are located at train stations, bus stops or the airport. for more information regarding the myki please head to the website below.

Getting to the event accommodation

The event will provide reserved accommodation for all riders (at a fee per night) which is a venue hosting only event patrons. The event is located in a town called Wesburn just below the mountain which hosts the event track. There will be parking available for you and the crew.

General things to know

There are general things you should know particuarly if you are a international visitor. Here are some things to keep in mind and know.

  • In Australia roads are driven on the left hand side unlike the USA, Phillipines and Europe where it is right hand side drive.
  • Be careful with speeding and driving laws in Australia, particularly in Melbourne as speed limits are heavily monitored and enforced with large fines and cameras everywhere. Speeding and driving infringements are serious offences in Australia and carry heavy financial penalties.
  • Instead of renting a car from the airport it might be cheaper outside of the city towards the hills and the event and easier in terms of driving experience.
  • When travelling using public transport ensure you have a “myki” otherwise it is common for transport to be patrolled with officers issuing out large fines that range in the hundreds of dollars in AUD.
  • If you can avoid driving at night as this increases the risk of encountering wildlife that if hit can cause serious damage to your vehicle.

Local knowledge

If you are wanting to hangout with the locals and get some skates in besure to hit them up via social media for them to show you the right places. Skating in Melbourne requires knowing the right place and times to skate hills.

Hitting up the locals you will get the best experience out of your trip with knowledge on where to stay and where to skate before and after the event. We are blessed with amazing roads only under an hour from the city and towards the event where the famous “bus runs reside”.
